Black Bears at Turpentine Creek Wildlife Refuge Climb Trees: Xena and Koda G. are taking full advantage of their new habitats! Born in captivity and spending the first part of their life trapped in a pay-to-play breeding and cub petting scheme, these young girls were not given the chance to truly explore their natural instincts until they were rescued by TCWR in 2016. In 2018, we moved them from their grass habitat into a newly-constructed enclosure that uses the indigenous flora and fauna of the Ozarks to create the optimal bear territory. Our hopes were the environment would encourage them to forage, nest, and have the opportunity to act like "real bears." That seems to be exactly what is happening!

Why is it so important for us that they act our typical bear behavior? One simple answer is the fact that it's what they deserve; before coming to their Refuge, their sole purpose was to line someone's pocketbook. Their lives were only valued for the money they could bring. They were stripped from their mother immediately after birth and forced to live in dismal conditions. Coming to the Refuge was a turning point.

Another reason is that bears get bored easily! They're highly intelligent and naturally curious. We are constantly coming up with innovative ideas to entertain our bear residents. While a lion or tiger can be content with a stable enrichment routine, a bear needs more variety. If they're unengaged, their physical health will suffer and their mental health will deteriorate. These habitats are full of new things to explore and trees to climb! The less they are deprived of the ability to perform their natural habits, the more our bear residents will thrive in a happy, healthy manner.

Fear not- these fun-loving girls will not climb a tree and escape. While we left a thick grove of trees, the ones near the fence were cut down and the fence itself was outfitted with a jump guard and electricity for their protection and everyone else's.

We are excited to continue to watch Xena and Koda G find themselves. This couldn't have been done without you! We are constantly revising and maintaining quality habitats at the Refuge. A donation to our habitat fund would be appreciated by all of our animal residents: https://www.turpentinecreek.org/suppo...
