It's National Bear Awareness Week, and Turpentine Creek Wildlife Refuge is celebrating by introducing you to our bear residents!

National Bear Awareness Week was created to educate the public on the important roles that bears play in the ecosystem. We have spent the week doing just that, all while letting people know what to do should they encounter a bear. Here are some fast facts about this important species:

*A black bear's diet is 90% plant-based.

*A brown bear eats up to 90 pounds of food in the fall.

*Black bears can have a brown or "cinnamon" colored coat.

*Bears are not "true hibernators" and instead enter a winter sleep called "torpor."

Each of our bear residents has their own unique personalities. Bears are by nature, highly curious animals. They require a constantly-evolving enrichment routine. Some have more of a "goofy" attitude, like Bam Bam, while others are laid back, like Koda B. We love each and everyone and enjoy watching them grow and develop here at the Refuge.
